I think I might just qualify to be un-American...

Because I just don't like Shopping. OK - I said it! (sigh) Please don't yell at me. I don't absolutely HATE it... in fact, I do love to find a good bargain. And I can pretend to like to shop. But I never last for more than an hour. And the idea of having to fight through crowds just annoys me unless it is Black Friday (day after Thanksgiving) when, for some really odd reason, I get the sudden urge to shop - usually around 4AM and only for 75% off or higher bargains...but I can usually lull myself back to sleep instead of getting up. But I digress...
Here's the dilemma... I will be starting a new job at the beginning of August, and their dress code is a bit more stringent than where I am now. Heck, it is going up about 8 points on a 10 point scale in terms of "dressy-ness" compared to where I am right now. Come Labor Day, it is basically one quarter of a notch below "Full Business". I've been at places that are business casual or just-plain-casual for YEARS... so I'm not even sure what constitutes "un-casual"! I am clear though, that no denim of any kind is allowed... Basically pants suits, dresses and skirts only after Labor Day (I do get to wear capris between now and then). Wow. Where to begin? I guess, cleaning out the closet and getting really clear on what is "work" vs. "home". And then - I need bottoms. That is what has changed the most. But I really hate shopping... especially when I find that most of the things that they have for heavier women are quite frumpy. AND they think that my waist is a good 5 inches bigger than it is, my thighs are 5 inches SMALLER and that I must have Quadruple D cup boobs. Seriously - this should be fun. But knowing that I am in between sizes has me in a bit of a panic. Oh well... I guess I will just have to find 3 or 4 outfits that I can rotate for a while. Hopefully with adjustable waists... I guess it is a good problem to have but I am not looking forward to the effort.
Any suggestions for places to find business clothes that aren't going to break the bank???

well, after my shopping meltdown the other day...no. But everyone said Catherines if not Lane Bryant. For dresses I love Catos but I dont know if you have them there. Sears has some suits, as does Dillards. On What Not to Wear they say to find pants that fit your largest part, so say your hips, and then have them tailored at you smallest part...aka your waist. I havent tried this yet, but I have the name of a tailor here and might give it a try!

K&G Fashion Outlet is a great place to start. They have suits and mix and match separates for a really low price. Woman's suits range from 25 to 80 dollars. They have plus sizes, regular sizes and a tailor, too. check it out... http://www.kgstores.com/kgs/index.jsp

Ross and Tjmax are good for prices. But it is really hit and miss on what you find.
I hope this helps!

I'm a bargain shopper as well and I love Ross. You have to look through a ton of stuff, but great deals and they sort their clothes by size, so you just go to the dresses under your size and you find a ton. Good luck!!

Take a look at www.kohls.com too -- they have some really nice things (Vera Wang makes a collection for them). I'm a big fan of on-line shopping -- takes a lot less effort!

Also, try on a few wrap dresses. They will continue to fit as you lose, and I think they are really flattering b/c you can adjust them to fit your body. I generally have to wear a tank under mine b/c of the V-neck being a little lower than I like, but I think that's a good look.

Happy shopping! (I know. . I hate the store thing too -- but on-line is much better!)
