20%, a shoe update and NOT an NSV...

Well, I have blisters. A lot of blisters. One on the back of each heel (there before, now a bit worse) and then one on the inside of each heel where the arch starts. Ouch. They hurt...BUT... I got up and went running/walking anyways this morning. I am finding that I am able to run futher than before. I still have to do a lot of walking but slowly but surely, I am doing more running. That is a good thing. And, blisters or not, I need to push on. I ended up popping them after I got done (yuck) to alleviate some of the pressure... not sure that helped - we'll see.
The other interesting thing is about another "blister" of kinds (fair warning - this is actually kind of gross, but it is my blog, so I'm going to post it) ... I don't know what to think about this, because on one hand it is a victory - on the other, it sucks. So... here it is - I have a blister-thing (blood blister, sore, not really sure) and it is at the edge of the left side of my stomach where the underwear hits and the stomach folds over. Why might this be a victory? Well, because I've lost enough skin that it is kind of folded and hanging more than before, hence rubbing. I guess that is good - but the bad part is that the skin isn't shrinking up as much as I'd like and now with running, that area is rubbing. Yesterday it got to the size of a quarter and raised up about 1/3 of an inch... today it rubbed some more, and just really hurts. It's at an awful place that seems to hit EVERYTHING... Seat Belt, counter height, etc... So, I'm not quite sure what to think. In the past though, between this and the feet blisters I would have stopped. Completely stopped, and used that as an excuse to not exercise AT ALL. Today, I'm finding myself in a mindset of alternatives - what can I do to make it work??? What a new concept! So I need to figure out something for this to keep the rubbing from making it worse. Any suggestions?
My big success is that I also got to the 20% of weight lost mark (only 1/10 of a pound, but it is a victory so I am going to claim it)! Hot Diggity!

Hi. I have never left a comment before so you do not know me. My name is Tracy and I was banded 11 months ago. I have lost 64 pounds and am so happy. I do not have a blog, but I read yours and a bunch faithfully.

Anyway, as far as your blisters on your feet, try mole skin. You can get it at any drug store. It helps. As far as your blister on your stomach. Go to the doctor. I was told that IF you need to remove the skin via plastic surgery and you have an established record that it is medically necessary (i.e. blisters that can get infected), insurance may pay for this. (I am not saying you will or won't need surgery but...). In the meantime, try vaseline to prevent the rubbing.

You are doing so well and the running victories are great to read about. Thank you for your blog and sharing your journey.

Thanks Tracy - great suggestion! I was thinking I should go to the doc on the tummy issue... just to start that record! Glad to have your comments anytime!

Couple of thoughts. Did you read Brookes blog on the runner lube? It is supposed to help with chaffing...I dont know if it would help with the underwear rub. Also, could you go with a different underwear? Like a higher granny panty or something that would go above the hangy bit?

I do see some other good news. You know sometime insurance will cover skin removal if you have things like rashes, sores, etc. And while you are not ready for that yet, this might be a good bit of ammo for when the time comes. Take a picture and document it!

20%!!!!!! OMG, that is amazing and you should be so, so proud of yourself.

With the red mark on your stomach---obviously the other posters had great ideas, namely, getting it documented by your DR. I wanted to add that I had one that sounds just the same a few weeks ago, and I can vouch that it hurts! I rubbed Vaseline on it, and if I did any activity put a larger band-aid or covering over it so it wouldn't rub. That, combined with the Vaseline, took care of it in a week to a week and a half. Good luck!

What Amy said!

Seriously, it's called Body Glide and when I gained weight and was wearing clothes that were a size too small for me I kept getting blisters like that around my natural waist.

The body glide did wonders.

Funny how it's happenign to you now, but for different, positive reasons.

Wow, your running is just becoming amazing and inspiring.

How did you get over that heavy feeling when you first started?

I can't be any help on the blister thing - soz but I sure do feel for you. They sound very ouch and I hope they heal quickly.

Way to go with your running and the 20%. And, if I may, sometimes I get a rash there, and neosporin helps with the infection-y sore part. Not sure if it is similar to what you are experiencing, but it does help.

Definitely go see a doctor and get the record established. I already looked into it, my insurance covers a panniculectomy (or whatever its calledm the chopping off of the tummy apron), so I hope to take advantage of that in the future!

Good for you keeping up with the running. No pain no gain!

Sarah, you've got to try TJB's recommendation about the moleskin. It is the first thing I thought of. When I got horrendous blisters when in Europe, so bad that I couldn't even walk (some as large as 50cent pieces), moleskin is the only thing that worked. It should work for your waistline sore as well. Most people use it wrong, however. What you want to do is cut a square that will extend about 1/3 of an inch beyond the edges of the sore/blister. Then, in the middle of the square, cut out a circle that is the same shape as the sore, and a touch bigger. then place the square with the hole in it over the area. clothes and shoes will now rub the moleskin, not the sore, and the sore will have air getting to it, allowing it to heal. Seriously works well. Make sure you get the thinner moleskin, though, not the padded kind (it has about 1/8 inch of padding). The padding doesn't work well for shoes - its too thick. It might work for your waistline sore, though. Hope this helps!

Congrats on the 20%!!! FANTASTIC!

There is a product made by Monestat called Anti Chaffing Gel. It has the appearance of a cream, but it is silicone based, and is not greasy. It would be good for where the skin is rubbing together. I use it when I wear skirts, and also when I have shoes that rub, to prevent blisters! It is sometimes hard to find, so I order it online from drugstore.com, but it may be available at drugstores. Sometimes it is with yeast infection products, sometimes it is with birth control...it is hard to locate!
